Chemical Composition of Demantoid Garnet
Demantoid is a variety of andradite garnet, a calcium-and-iron-rich silicate mineral. Its chemical formula is (Ca₃Fe₂Si₃O₁₂), reflecting that makeup. Pure andradite can occur in various colors, but what gives demantoid its prized green hue? The answer lies in tiny trace elements inside the crystal. In demantoid, a small amount of chromium substitutes for some of the iron in the garnet’s structure – and chromium is a powerful coloring agent that yields vibrant green color.

Hidden element
In fact, chromium is the same element that gives emeralds their green. Meanwhile, iron in the garnet (specifically ferric iron, Fe³⁺) tends to impart a yellowish tint. The interplay of these elements produces the range of green shades seen in demantoid: chromium contributes a pure vivid green, while iron adds a touch of golden or olive tone. As a result, demantoid garnets can range from a bright emerald-green to a more yellow-green or slightly brownish green, depending on the exact mix of trace chromium and iron present. Generally, the most valued Russian demantoids are those with a saturated, pure green color – the chromium-rich “Ural emerald” hue with minimal brown or yellow tone.

Demantoid famous dispersion?
Gemologists in laboratories can confirm chromium’s role by analyzing the gem’s light absorption spectrum or chemistry, but to the observer’s eye it simply appears as nature’s brilliant green handiwork. Importantly, demantoid’s optic properties also contribute to its beauty: it has a high refractive index and very high dispersion (the splitting of light into rainbow colors). In fact, with a dispersion value around 0.057, demantoid can exhibit more fiery spectral “rainbow” flashes than diamond.

This dispersion – combined with its refractive index around 1.88 – gives demantoid an “adamantine” (diamond-like) luster, making well-cut gems sparkle intensely. In summary, the unique chemistry (chromium and iron) provides the color, while the garnet’s composition and crystal structure provide the brilliance and fire that make demantoid so captivating to behold.
